Upcoming Presentations and Workshops
Saturday, 01 March 2008. Writing for an International Audience. Special Session. Sponsor: American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) Florida Chapter Annual Conferece. Orlando, Florida. How do you write for an international audience whose native language and cultural expractions are different from your own? How do you work with translators? How do you review content that has been translated into a language other than your own? This session offers an overview of answers to these questions and invites you to contribute your own questions and/or solutions.

Tuesday, 11 March 2008. Writing for Translation. Pre-Conference Seminar. Sponsor: Translation World. Montreal, Canada. Synopsis: The seminar focuses on how translation and translation technologies affect content and design. We review localization, internationalization and globalization issues and methods that are known to reduce translation costs, reduce time-to-market delays associated with the translation and localization of print and online content, and reduce usability problems experienced by non-native readers of English. This is a highly interactive seminar with many exercises and limitless occasions for group discussion.

Thursday, 20 March 2008. Overcoming Cultural Barriers to Global Marketing. Audio Conference. Sponsor: Foreign Exchange Translations. Jean Monnet, the founder of the European Community, once declared, "If I were again facing the challenge to integrate Europe, I would probably start with culture." Culture is the context in which things happen. Whether you develop, market, sell or purchase products for a global audience or interact with people from around the world -- even if they work in the next cubicle -- you must address the issues of culture to be effective. How and why do the needs of people from one country differ from those in a different country? How do you assess this? In this presentation we will examine definitions of culture and consider how cultural differences are expressed. We will then explore the use of tools called cultural models, review the variables that define these models of culture, and weigh their usefulness. We will also discuss how to develop a customized model of culture for your particular context.
