Writing and Designing for an International Audience

The seminar focuses on how translation and translation technologies affect content and design. We review localization, internationalization, and globalization issues and methods that are known to reduce translation costs, reduce time-to-market delays associated with the translation and localization of print and online content, and reduce usability problems experienced by non-native readers of English. This is a highly interactive seminar with many exercises and limitless occasions for group discussion.

Nancy Hoft strongly encourages you to complement this seminar by inviting one or more strategically selected individuals to make short presentations during the seminar. A representative from your upper management can offer participants a broad business context for the seminar. A representative from your internal localization team or selected translation firm can offer company-specific examples and issues for the seminar. We can integrate these presenters into the seminar at their convenience throughout the day.

This seminar does not address cultural issues due to time constraints, although cultural issues are extremely important (and very interesting) to consider. You can add (not substitute) the seminar module on culture for an extra fee, which adds one half-day to the length of the seminar. We use the additional time to address issues of culture (see the optional module on Culture) and then to consider ways of resolving the contradictions inherent in integrating culture, translation, and design.

Nancy Hoft can customize this seminar outline and its content and exercises to better suit your needs. Contact Nancy Hoft at nhoft@world-ready.com or at 239/826.6932 for more information.
